What is a Professional Patient Advocate?

A Professional Patient Advocate, also called a Healthcare Advocate, gives you the tools to understand your health condition, communicate with your healthcare team, and make informed choices. They can act as your personal guide as you navigate the healthcare system.

Patient Advocates do not provide clinical opinions, recommend specific treatment choices, or perform medical care of any type, even if they possess clinical credentials. The role of an advocate is informational, not medical.

Will a Professional Patient Advocate give me medical advice?

No. Although Dr. Perlowski is a physician, when acting as your advocate, she and others on our team will not be able to give you medical advice, or second opinions. But, they will be able to help you understand and organize information about your health conditions and treatment options, and help you communicate with your medical providers.

What can First Wave Health Advocates help me with?

Though we can’t give medical advice, we can help with several key aspects of your medical care including:

• Reviewing your medical history and records (no matter how lengthy or complex!) and organizing them into one case summary that you can share with your medical providers

• Helping you fully understand your medical conditions, test results, and treatment options

• Helping you find medical providers, including specialists that can help you with your condition, and arrange second opinions

• Preparing you for medical appointments and giving you advice on how to best communicate with your medical providers

• Being on the phone or video call during appointments with your medical providers

• Acting as a resource for the family members and friends who are involved in your care

• Serving as your personal guide through all phases of your health journey
